Annuntio vobis gaudium ….. Olympia in finem …. Gratias Deo ….

Although the daily proceedings of the quadrennial meeting of international drug cheats, prima donnas, narcissists and spoilt brats have, at last, vanished from our screens and airwaves, the developed world continues its orgy of rejoicing in its investment in jingoism.

“Our highly paid, scientifically-honed physical freaks are better than your highly paid, scientifically-honed physical freaks,” is the mantra of the moment.

This glorified proletarian desire for bread and circuses, coupled with our obsessive equation of national virility with shiny baubles won in paddock and pond is perplexing. This obsession makes even less sense in the context of the dark Olympic underbelly of politics; corruption; jingoism; international animosity and, pre-eminently, money.

The Olympic Games are a chimera, a momentary international distraction for those nations that can afford it. They are nothing short of an extravagant exercise in the name of chiffon chauvinism.

In the unlikely event that anybody noticed during our Olympic time-warp, the undeveloped world goes on – gauging and scratching its painful existence. Perhaps, just perhaps, the key-keepers of our collective exchequers might be persuaded to consider redirecting some of their precious guilders towards a more worthy cause – humanity.

Then may we let the Olympics return to its geographic and cultural home wherein naked men can tussle; run, skip, hop, jump and throw javelins and rocks at each other under mountain’s shadow. At least such a spectacle will guarantee the participation of a genuinely colourful and enthusiastic cast of amateur and fixated misfits.

Dominus opem nobis.

The Australian community is in for a world of long overdue pain. It is wholly its own fault for which I have nil sympathy.

Thanks indeed for the comment. I do agree that we badly need to 'clean out the swamp'. Trump certainly stirred those fetid waters.

I agree with the general thrust of your comments but the Australian community believes the governments can deliver without pain and there will be a lot of pain up ahead.

Nice job on the essay John, but regardless of his positions, Dutton is too much a cretin of the past, he also looks like the walking dead. We don't need more career politicians, we need a Trump.
